State-sponsored prekindergarten making political headway
Mississippi is the only Southern state without state-sponsored prekindergarten, but the House and Senate have passed bills to fund a pilot program.
It’s the first time both the House and Senate have done so, but the versions of the bills are $6 million apart for what would be a voluntary program.
On Tuesday, about 50 early childhood advocates, including those from the Mississippi Early Childhood Association, the Mississippi Head Start Association, public schools and child-care providers, came together at the state Capitol to rally for implementation of a state prekindergarten program.
