Palazzo holds big funding edge

U.S. Rep. Steven Palazzo holds a huge fundraising advantage in his re-election bid, according to campaign finance reports filed with the Federal Elections Commission this past week.

According to the reports due by the Oct. 15 quarterly filing deadline, Palazzo’s campaign now reports $832,958 in total receipts, with $591,053 spent and $294,882 cash on hand. The other candidates remaining in the race, Libertarian Ron Williams of Moss Point, Democrat Matt Moore of Biloxi and Reform Party candidate Robert W. Claunch of Diamondhead, all reported no contributions to the FEC.

Moore was a late addition to the race, after Democrat Michael Herrington of Hattiesburg, who had won the Democratic nomination, dropped out in September to care for his ailing mother. Herrington’s family business was also struggling. Palazzo, a Republican, is seeking his second term in the Nov. 6 vote. He defeated longtime incumbent Democrat Gene Taylor in 2010.
