Medals lost in Katrina replaced
Imagine receiving distinguished military awards for serving your country and losing them during one of the worst hurricanes to hit the Gulf region.
Imagine never even officially receiving one of those awards because of clerical oversight.
That is exactly what happened to Oak Grove resident Francis Michael Risley, who was injured during the Vietnam War.
Risley, 65, who was in the U.S. Navy Construction Battalion (Seabees), was awarded the Purple Heart in 1968 while still overseas. However, the award presentation was omitted from his military service record.
