Analysis: Miss. revenue collections up but no joy
Forgive people in the upper echelons of Mississippi government for not being excited about year-end tax collections that were $250 million, or 5.5 percent, higher than expectations.
Fiscal 2012 ended June 30, and fiscal 2013 began July 1.
Many believe the 2013 state budget was underfunded when lawmakers left town in April. Agency directors who are feeling shortchanged will begin jockeying now to get more money in January, although there are no guarantees those requests will be granted.
Many lawmakers think they did well in holding spending in check, but they’re finding that having a spare $250 million can be a royal pain.
