Film shines spotlight on lawsuit history

Vicki Slater, president-elect of the Mississippi Association for Justice, formerly the Mississippi Trial Lawyers Association, says the film is filled with inaccuracies and is orchestrated to make it appear there is an overwhelming problem with the civil justice system.

“The film contains the following inaccuracies: First, lawsuits are not a cancer, lawsuits are a God-given right of freedom by which the American citizen can seek justice against a huge bully corporation when the bully corporation kills or maims him or his family members,” Slater said.

“… The only justice that can be rendered against the huge corporate bully is in the civil justice system when an American citizen exercises his God- given right by filing suit.”

Imprisoned former attorney Dickie Scruggs is featured in the film. Slater said the system worked because Scruggs went to prison for bribing a judge.

Kelly said he was surprised by Slater’s claim of inaccuracies in the film. “I have heard people say it unfairly depicts attorneys,” Kelly said. “There are good attorneys. We’re not saying all attorneys are bad. ”
