Democratic lawmakers oppose Bryant’s education cuts
The Legislature’s Democrats condemned Gov. Phil Bryant’s budget recommendation today, saying cuts to education and public health will be devastating to Mississippians.
At a Capitol news conference, lawmakers said they won’t approve a budget that gives one penny less to public education, community colleges and universities than they received last year.
“It wasn’t that long ago that (Bryant) was out on the campaign trail,” said Sen. Hob Bryan, D-Amory. “But I don’t think he said, ‘Please vote for me so I can come down to Jackson and cut education even deeper.’”
Bryant’s budget includes $73 million in cuts to K-12 education, $12 million to community colleges and $18 million to universities.
