Chaney – Harry Reid holding up flood insurance extension

By: Magnolia Tribune - December 13, 2011

Flood insurance availability may soon be gone

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) – If you don’t have flood insurance before Friday, chances are you won’t be able to get it.

State Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney says he’s hopeful Congress will take up an extension of the National Flood Insurance Program before December 16th.

Last spring’s record Mississippi river flooding drives the issue home.

Chaney says unless we get a Christmas miracle, Mississippians living in a flood plain are in a difficult position.

“We’re held over a barrel. The problem is real simple. Unless we get cooperation from Harry Reid in the Senate, who is a Democrat unfortunately in this situation, we are not going to have flood insurance after the 16th of December. Unless we can get a compromise worked out and that’s going to be short of a miracle for these holidays for Mississippi,” said Chaney.
