Miss. Military bases could take hit

WASHINGTON — Gulf Coast lawmakers say they’re concerned about how military bases and other defense-related interests in the region will be affected by a congressional committee’s failure to agree on a debt-reduction plan.

The committee’s deadlock, announced Monday, means automatic spending cuts will take effect beginning in 2013. Half those cuts – about $500 billion – will come from defense programs and could cost the region thousands of defense-related jobs.

Congress could decide to undo the cuts, but President Barack Obama said Monday he would veto any attempt to do that.
