MCJ – The PERS scare

By: Magnolia Tribune - October 14, 2011

The PERS scare

Mississippi’s pension system could have as much as $8 billion in unfunded liabilities, which at the very least ought to raise concerns about what future retirees will get – if anything.

PERS’ own numbers show the system has 64.2 percent of the funds needed to pay its liabilities over 30 years, well below the recommended level of 80 percent.

A recent Pew study ranked PERS 37th in terms of funding status nationally.

Barbour has been attacked by Democrats and some in the news media for creating the study commission to analyze the long-term solvency of PERS.

Desperate, liberals are waging a fear-mongering campaign to scare state employees and retirees into voting Democrat in the November elections.
