CL – High speed rail could stop in Jackson

By: Magnolia Tribune - May 9, 2011

JATRAN: Regional transit a metro need

Last month, Gov. Haley Barbour appointed Pelahatchie Mayor Knox Ross to the Southern High-Speed Rail Commission, an organization representing Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama.

President Barack Obama has proposed overhaul of the country’s transportation infrastructure, particularly implementing a nationwide high-speed rail system.

Ross said a plan, known as the Gulf Coast High-Speed Rail Corridor, offers a route from Houston to New Orleans to Meridian to Birmingham to Atlanta, but said he’d like to see a possible path run through Jackson, as well.

The federal government has pledged $8 billion for high-speed rail through the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act.
