BP: Payments leak slower than oil
British Petroleum, Transocean and other parties ultimately deemed responsible for the 11 deaths, multiple injuries, environmental damage and economic losses that resulted from the April 20, 2010, explosion and inferno that engulfed the Deepwater Horizon oil rig off the Louisiana coast have some checks to write.
But back during the time that the well was gushing and 2 4/7 cable TV news network coverage detailed the disaster, BP pledged to Mississippians to “make it right.”
Clearly, there are a growing number of Mississippians who don’t believe that promise is being kept and certainly not in a timely fashion. Records show that BP’s compensation fund for Gulf oil spill victims had taken in some 91,000 claims and paid a final settlement payment to only one company – and that after BP went to bat for the company with Kenneth Feinberg, the Washington lawyer appointed to administer BP’s $20 billion oil spill compensation fund.
