BRYANT APPOINTS HERNANDO SENATOR AS APPROPRIATIONS CHAIRMAN
Hernando – Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant announced today the appointment of Doug Davis, R-Hernando, to the position of Appropriations Committee Chairman for the Senate.
“Senator Davis has done a remarkable job as Vice Chairman of Appropriations,” Bryant said. “In these challenging times I need someone who can begin day one and tackle these real issues we will face in the next legislative session. Sen. Davis has served closely with former Chairman Nunnelee, which will make this transition as smooth as possible.”
Davis will replace Congressman-Elect Alan Nunnelee as Chairman of Appropriations. Davis was first elected to the Senate in a special election in 2004. Since 2008, Davis has served as Universities and Colleges Chairman and on various other committees. He is currently the Vice President of First Security Bank and past president of the Hernando Chamber of Commerce.
Senator Doug Davis said, “For the past six years I have been a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and for the past three years I have had the privilege of standing along side Alan Nunnelee and other state leaders helping to navigate Mississippi through this great recession. I am honored and humbled by Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant appointing me to Chair the Senate Appropriations Committee, and I look forward to working with members of the House, Senate and our Governor as we attempt to meet the great challenge that is before us.”
In other business, Lt. Gov. Bryant announced the following appointments to Vice Chairman of Appropriations, Chairman of Universities and Colleges, and Chairman of Forestry.
Sen. Videt Carmichael, R-Meridian, was appointed Vice Chairman of Appropriations. Sen. Carmichael is currently the Chairman of the Senate Education Committee and has served since 2000.
Sen. Perry Lee, R-Mendenhall, was appointed Chairman of the Universities and Colleges Committee. Sen. Lee is currently the chairman of the Forestry Committee. He is a retired Mississippi State Cooperative Extension Service employee with a Master’s degree from Mississippi State and has served in the Senate since 2004.
Sen. Giles Ward, R-Louisville, was appointed Chairman of the Forestry Committee. Sen. Ward is a long time advocate for the State’s forest industry with a professional career spanning 33 years with Georgia-Pacific. He also manages a 185-acre tree farm located on the Winston-Neshoba County line in east central Mississippi. Sen. Ward has served in the State Senate since 2008.
