Barbour budget spares schooling
JACKSON — The Mississippi Adequate Education Program will get the same amount of money in fiscal 2012 as it received this year, but most other state agencies will sustain 8.1 percent spending cuts under the $5.47 billion budget Gov. Haley Barbour proposed on Monday.
State funding sources for the 2012 fiscal year that begins July 1 will be hamstrung by a loss of $634 million in federal stimulus money, little anticipated growth in state revenues, and a jump in the state’s percentage of Medicaid funding, Barbour said during an afternoon news conference.
He noted that the amount of available money is about $250 million less than fiscal year 2008, the state’s peak spending year.
