Pink cleat suit back on, Diaz says

Coy Sheppard’s attorney said he was assured the Mendenhall High School football kicker would be able to suit up for Friday night’s playoffs against Purvis after school officials and Sheppard resolved a lawsuit he had filed over his dismissal for wearing pink cleats in October.

Instead, Jackson attorney Oliver Diaz Jr. said, the senior was forced to sit on the bench in street clothes, which humiliated him and his family. Sheppard’s mother was so upset, Diaz said, her blood pressure went up and she had to be hospitalized.

Diaz said Saturday he will no longer drop the lawsuit over Sheppard’s dismissal from the team. Instead, Diaz said, he will amend the complaint to charge the school district, high school and coach Chris Peterson with breach of contract, saying they failed to abide by the verbal agreement to reinstate Sheppard on the Tigers football team. The agreement had been reached in a meeting Thursday between Diaz, Sheppard and his family, and the school district.
