Republicans question Taylor’s use of congressional staff

The National Republican Congressional Committee is questioning incumbent Democratic Rep. Gene Taylor’s use of congressional staff to compile voting records being used by Taylor’s campaign to defend against attack ads funded by the NRCC.

But Taylor said he is following House rules and his congressional staff routinely compiles and compares his voting record to keep his constituents informed.

“It’s clearly an ethics issue and clearly an example of Gene Taylor once again not being responsible with taxpayer money,” NRCC spokesman Greg Blair said.

“He’s using House resources paid for by Mississippi taxpayers for his campaign.”

The NRCC has run ads against Taylor, saying he votes a majority of the time with Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Taylor has countered on his re-election website and in campaign e-mails and press releases that of 1,466 votes he’s cast since January 2009, Pelosi agreed with his vote 34 times, or only 2 percent. The source Taylor cites for the info is “Compiled by Office of Rep. Gene Taylor from Congressional Quarterly Weekly Magazine, 2009 & 2010.”
