The Hill – Barbour: States must call shots in Gulf recovery
Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R) told a presidential commission probing the BP oil spill that Gulf Coast states must be the primary decision-makers in the region’s recovery from the disaster.
“Whatever structures we set up … need to be dominated by the state governments,” Barbour told the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling in Washington Tuesday.
“We don’t think the shots ought to be called from Washington,” he added, noting expertise in the states and their academic institutions.
The comments come as long-term response plans are beginning to take shape.
