Nunnelee: “We need a pro-gun Speaker of the House.”
In the wake of a landmark Supreme Court ruling in the case of McDonald v. Chicago yesterday, Senator Alan Nunnelee stated his continued commitment to the Second Amendment and the right of gun ownership for every American.
“Now more than ever we need a Speaker of the House that supports the right of gun ownership. Speaker Pelosi has an F rating from the NRA, and her choice for the Chair of the critical Judiciary Committee, Rep. John Conyers, has an F rating as well. They set the agenda for Congress. Without changing Speakers, residents of the First District of Mississippi cannot be guaranteed pro-gun leadership in Washington.”
Senator Nunnelee praised the Supreme Court for reaffirming the right of individuals to bear arms, but expressed disappointment that the ruling opened the door for public officials at all levels – local, state, and federal – to pass stifling regulations on gun ownership. “This ruling means that it is even more important to elect leaders that share Mississippians’ values about the Second Amendment, all the way from local aldermen to Speaker of the House.”
The contentious 5-4 Supreme Court ruling came as a result of a challenge to gun bans in parts of Chicago and Oak Park, Illinois.
“It is important to remember that Speaker Pelosi’s record of leadership does not respect the fundamental right of gun ownership – a right the Court upheld yesterday,” said Senator Nunnelee. Senator Nunnelee asked the residents of the First District: “If you were a member of Congress, would you vote for the Speaker and her views?”
“We need new leadership in Congress,” said Senator Nunnelee.
