Childers Hails Landmark Supreme Court Ruling on Second Amendment Rights

Washington, DC – Hailing another victory for gun owners and Second Amendment advocates nationwide, U.S. Rep. Travis Childers (MS-01) today praised the Supreme Court’s ruling that the right to keep and bear arms cannot be infringed upon by state and local governments. The ruling came in the case McDonald v. Chicago, a challenge to the city of Chicago’s gun control law – one of the strictest in the nation.

“Today’s Supreme Court ruling represents a landmark victory for Americans across the nation,” said Childers. “A violation of gun ownership rights anywhere is a threat to gun ownership rights everywhere, and today’s decision is an important step towards protecting this constitutional freedom for all Americans. I’m proud to have introduced legislation to overturn a similar gun ban in our nation’s capital, and I will continue fighting to support and protect Americans’ Second Amendment rights.”

Childers has been a leading advocate of Americans’ right to bear arms. He previously joined a bipartisan majority of his Congressional colleagues in signing on to an amicus curiae brief urging the Court to overturn Chicago’s restrictive and unconstitutional ban. He has also introduced legislation to overturn Washington, D.C.’s gun ban, which violates the Supreme Court’s 2008 decision in District of Columbia v. Heller.
