Lawmaker’s message: Keep it local
BILOXI — After a lengthy hearing on the Gulf oil disaster, state Sen. Billy Hewes III gave BP officials a parting message Thursday: Hire local people, get more input from local leaders on protecting our shoreline and promptly pay local businesses that are hurting financially.
“Local, local, local,” Hewes said. “You can’t do enough, and you can’t do it fast enough.”
Hewes, R-Gulfport, chairs a special Senate committee on the oil disaster, which held its first hearing Thursday in Biloxi. A similar House committee will have a hearing in Jackson next week.
