Barbour – Assistance available for tornado victims

ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE FOR TORNADO VICTIMS IN YAZOO, CHOCTAW COUNTIES
Donations welcome through MEMA, State Volunteer Commission

Jackson, Mississippi – Governor Haley Barbour and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency are distributing the following information for storm victims seeking help:

Food, bottled water, ice, debris removal, etc.
· Yazoo City Church of Christ, located at 1230 E. Broadway, Yazoo City for distribution. The church is only open during daylight hours. For more information visit www.volunteermississippi.org or call (888) 353-1793.
· The Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Service has set up a volunteer/distribution center at the former Yazoo Motor Building located at the corner of U.S. 49 and Old Hwy 16. Food, ice, water and cleaning kits will be available. Volunteers are available to assist residents with debris clean up and tree removal. Faith-based and non-profits organizations can set up resource centers in the Yazoo Motor Building parking lot.
· The American Red Cross and the First Baptist Church is offering fixed feeding meals to storm victims. The church is located at 328 Grand Ave. in Yazoo City.
· The Salvation Army is providing meals in front of Ribeye’s Steakhouse on Old MS-Hwy 16. Both the Salvation Army and ARC are also providing mobile feeding units.
· ARC also has two Emergency Response Vehicles located at 895 College St. in Ackerman. The ERVs will be at this location until Wednesday.

Donations/volunteer
Donations can be made through the Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Service website www.volunteermississippi.org or call (888) 353-1793. Those wanting to make donations and/or volunteer can also visit MEMA’s website at www.msema.org. Donations also are being accepted at the Mississippi State Fairgrounds, Brandon City Hall and Yazoo County Human Services, located at 224 E. Broadway Ave.

Shelters
· The L.T. Miller Community Center, 930 Lamar Ave. Yazoo City, Yazoo County, is currently open for those needing shelter. ARC is also providing meals at this shelter.
· The Choctaw Community Center, North College St. Ackerman, Choctaw County, is currently closed, but will open if needed.

Referral/general information
· United Way’s Mississippi 211, a telephone information and referral line, is available to assist individuals affected by the storm. 2-1-1 Mississippi is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
