CALLER ID ANTI-SPOOFING ACT
Call Commissioner Bentz’s Office to Register on the Do Not Call List
Southern District Public Service Commissioner Leonard Bentz announced today the passage of the Caller ID Anti-Spoofing Act, which will outlaw deceptive techniques such as showing a different number on a person’s caller ID than the one that is actually being used to make the call.
“This type of misrepresentation has unfortunately become common with deceptive telemarketing calls,” Bentz said. “My office has investigated too many complaints from Ratepayers and this will help safeguard Mississippians and bring deceptive callers to justice.”
The Caller ID Anti-spoofing Act (House Bill 872) becomes effective July 1, 2010. Anyone found guilty of violating the Act can be fined, as a misdemeanor, up to $1,000 or prosecuted as an unfair trade practice under existing state law.
“My staff is available to register Mississippians on the Mississippi Do Not Call List. Cell phone users may register their numbers on the National Do Not Call list and we can easily direct them to that program,” Bentz added.
Commissioner Bentz encourages anyone receiving unwanted telemarketing calls to inform his office by calling 1-800-356-6429.
There is no deadline to register and the lists do not expire.
