Reeves: Health care reform will boost Medicaid costs

JACKSON, Miss. (WTVA) – State Treasurer Tate Reeves says the new health care reform law will boost spending on Mississippi’s Medicaid program.

In an opinion piece released Monday, Reeves says the expansion of the program will add approximately $150 million in unfunded mandates each year for the state budget.

He adds that the percentage of Medicaid spending in the state’s general fund budget could go from 24.5% to 36.6% over the next ten years.

Medicaid is Mississippi’s second largest budget expense.
