SALTER – Budget cuts no picnic for schools

By: Magnolia Tribune - September 8, 2009

Budget cuts no picnic for schools

The $171.9 million, 5 percent budget cuts — made roughly across-the-board in state government by Gov. Haley Barbour on Thursday — won’t be a picnic for schools community colleges, universities, and state agencies.

Yet while there will be pain from these initial Fiscal Year 2010 budget cuts, the real pain isn’t likely to be felt for some time to come. If you’re thinking that the budget pain train will arrive later this fiscal year when a likely second round of budget cuts are announced, you’re shortsighted.

Gravy train ends

From the standpoint of the national debt, the growing federal budget deficit and the impact that federal stimulus spending will have on federal taxpayers, that train has already left the station and will be met by our descendents.
