Devil’s in details of Mississippi budget

ouse and Senate negotiators drew closer Monday to compromising on a state budget as the calendar continues counting down the 15 days to a new budget year with Mississippi’s total state spending still in question.

The two sides are only $12 million apart on a budget that determines how the state will spend nearly $5 billion on services in the 2010 fiscal year that begins July 1.

For now, the problem is in the details.

Three negotiators for the House and three senators met in Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant’s office for about three hours Monday and laid out some of their differences.

“I think we were able, as a result of this last meeting, to show exactly where the differences are regarding revenue and expenditures. To this point, it’s been very fluid, but now we’re getting more specific, and that’s been very helpful,” said Sen. Doug Davis, R-Hernando, and one of the Senate negotiators.

Talks were to resume this morning.
