Fees: Melton’s legal woes self-inflicted
The notion that the taxpayers should pay the late Mayor Frank Melton’s legal fees is patently absurd and sets an incredibly bad precedent for the future.
Prior to Melton’s unfortunate and untimely death, the Jackson City Council had refused to pay Melton’s legal fees. That decision rested on the fact that some City Council members believe Melton was acting far afield of his official duties when he took the actions that put him in need of a lawyer’s services.
The Jackson City Council said last week it needed more time to decide how to settle pending legal matters involving Melton. The council met behind closed doors for about 50 minutes last week to discuss several legal matters.
