Mayor Melton sued by student for tuition

A Forest woman is asking a court to force Jackson Mayor Frank Melton to follow through on his promise to pay for her college degree.

In a lawsuit filed earlier this month in Scott County Circuit Court, Casey Cooper says Melton publicly agreed during a 2001 Student Council Convention at Mississippi College to pay for her schooling.

Melton, who was not mayor at the time, paid for books and tuition for Cooper’s freshman year, but left the family to pay for the next three years of college costs. The Cooper family accrued about $13,730 in college bills, the lawsuit states.
