Scott: Fight crime by increasing police,
making public safety top budget priority
JACKSON (Thursday, March 19, 2009) – Brenda Scott, a Democratic candidate for Jackson mayor, said she will fight crime by giving the Jackson Police Department the number of officers it needs, paying officers a competitive salary and making public safety a top budget priority.
Scott supports increasing the police force from 420 to at least 650 sworn officers and providing them with the proper equipment they need. She said police and all city employees must earn a competitive, realistic wage because earning less than $25,000 a year for a starting officer “just doesn’t cut it.”
“Jackson voters need to ask Councilman Crisler one question about his plan to fight crime: ‘Where have you been the past eight years in office?’” Scott said. “This is just another example of the failed leadership and failed policies that have held our city back for so long.
“Jackson needs a change, a new start, new leadership,” she said. “I am the only Democratic candidate for mayor who offers a clean break from the past and strong leadership for the future. It’s time to make public safety a top budget priority.
“Once we get a handle on crime and begin repairing our crumbling infrastructure, then new business, new industry and new residents will move to the Capital City. It’s time for a change in Jackson – and I’m ready to provide the leadership to accomplish just that.”
