U.S. District Judge Dan Jordan will hold a telephone conference today with lawyers involved in the civil rights trial of Jackson Mayor Frank Melton to determine whether the mayor is healthy enough now to stand trial.
Melton’s trial is slated for Feb. 2, but it already has been delayed three times. The most recent delay came last month when Melton’s doctors testified that with his severe heart ailments it’s likely the trial, then set for Jan. 5, could not have been held without delay.
Jordan ordered that Melton comply fully with his doctors’ prescribed treatment and regularly report his progress.
Melton checked himself into St. Dominic Hospital, where he stayed for a week earlier this month. He completed his recuperation at his home in Tyler, Texas, before returning to Jackson earlier this week.
