The beef?: Campaign finance foibles

By: Magnolia Tribune - December 29, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 12/28/8

When considering the future of campaign finance reform in Mississippi, voters should ponder the following legal and political realities:

Two Georgia business executives have been sentenced to federal prison for their roles in the failed Mississippi Beef Processors LLC. The cull cattle plant closed just months after it opened in 2004, costing 400 jobs and sticking taxpayers with $55 million in state-backed loans.

A third executive has pleaded guilty and will be sentenced in January.

Their crimes? All were executives of the Facility Group of Smyrna, Ga., the group that managed construction of the failed beef plant.
