Voter registration in Mississippi this year is officially up more than 130,000 – a number expected to climb in the coming weeks.
The state’s voting rolls now officially carry 1,851,266 names, according to the latest numbers given the secretary of state’s office. Circuit clerks say that number will grow by thousands because they’re still processing the huge influx of last-minute registrations, some still flooding in by mail.
Clerks attribute the spike in registration to the historic presidential race between John McCain and Barack Obama, which has led to increased registrations across the entire state.
