For the second week in a row, the financial crisis could determine whether a debate of national importance occurs in Mississippi.
Republican Sen. Roger Wicker and Democratic challenger Ronnie Musgrove are slated to debate Friday night in Jackson in an event that will be televised in most areas of the state.
Wicker is serving in the post – left vacant by the retirement last year of Trent Lott – as an appointee of Gov. Haley Barbour. The winner of the Nov. 4 election will fill the remainder of Lott’s term.
Congress remains in session dealing with the financial crisis and there is a possibility that Wicker might need to be in Washington for a vote, but at this point that seems remote. Last week, Republican presidential nominee John McCain said he couldn’t participate in the Friday debate at the University of Mississippi unless the financial crisis was solved, but he eventually changed his mind and appeared in Oxford.
Ryan Annison, a spokesman for Wicker, said the senator plans to be at the debate, which will run from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Mississippi College School of Law in Jackson.
