Convention: GOP seeks to get back to business

By: Magnolia Tribune - September 3, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 9/3/8

With most of the country breathing a collective sigh of relief that Hurricane Gustav only sideswiped New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the 2008 Republican National Convention sought Tuesday to get back “on message.”

A massive clean-up effort remains in Gustav’s wake. But mercifully, it was a smaller, less-volatile storm and the response of government at all levels – and that of residents who heeded early warnings to evacuate – was far better than during Hurricane Katrina.

Now, with the storm subsiding and with the media flashpoint surrounding the pregnancy of GOP vice presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin’s daughter settling down as well, Republicans worked hard Tuesday to steer the convention back to its purpose – making the case for the McCain/Palin ticket before a vast national TV audience.
