Obviously the story of the day was Gustav. As around most of the rest of the country, all eyes were fixed to coverage. After it appeared that there would not be a cataclysmic levee failure, the RNC scheduled an afternoon business meeting of the delegates that adopted leaders, rules and a platform. It was two hours in and out . . . nothing fancy.
Then Laura Bush and Cindy McCain spoke and brought Haley Barbour, Bobby Jindal, Bob Riley and Rick Perry in via satellite to give updates and show how far we have come since Katrina on storm preparation and response. This was good government at work that just happened to be good politics.
Palin a grandmom to be
Well, it obviously was not news to the family, but it was certainly news to the rest of the world. It came out that Palin’s 17 year old, soon-to-be-wed daughter is having a baby. I think this will be a two day blip on the news cycle. Obama was brought into the world in similar circumstances. Plus, by the time Palin’s a grandmom, John Edwards will be teaching his love child how to ride a tricycle (sorry, couldn’t resist).
The kooks
There is about a 7 or 8 block secure zone that you have to have credentials to enter. Outside that zone is where the real kooks are.
Here was my first run in . . .
She smelled worse than she looked. I have been to rendering plants that had nicer ambiance. But they were true believers. I just wish they believed in showering.
The PowerLine Blog guys (that I met yesterday) also had an interesting story about the urban boeheme anarchists that attacked a busload of cub scouts.
In fact many of the maggot infested urban terrorists got tear gas and dog treatments, which suited me just fine. I am hoping to score some good video on that today.
The Convention
Now that the worst case scenario on Gustav is behind us (hopefully), I think the convention will start getting back to some sense of normalcy. Expect to continue to see just about every official and non-official event have a Hurricane recovery theme or direct benefit via fundraising and contributions.
