Rep. Bennie Thompson, the only Mississippi delegate who is a federal elected official, had a moment on stage at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday as he participated in a Congressional Black Caucus tribute to Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, who died last week.
“To be a trailblazer you have to be strong,” Thompson said of Tubbs Jones, who was the first black member of the House of Representatives from Ohio.
Thompson, an early supporter of Sen. Barack Obama’s bid for the White House, predicted the Illinois senator would leave a lasting impression if elected president.
In an interview earlier in the day, Thompson said Mississippi’s 41 delegates and six alternates are all united behind Obama, although there are bitter differences in other delegations between Obama delegates and those who support Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y.
