Both Parties Invest in Tuesday’s Mississippi House Special

By: Magnolia Tribune - April 17, 2008

CQ Politics, 4/17/8

National attention is flowing into Mississippi’s usually Republican-friendly 1st Congressional District in advance of next Tuesday’s House special election. The blitz of spending by the parties’ House campaign committees is a signal that Republicans, defending the seat that GOP Rep. Roger Wicker vacated when he was appointed to the Senate, view local officeholder Travis Childers as a legitimate threat to capture the seat for the Democrats — and that Democrats heartily agree with that assessment.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), which orchestrates the party’s national House campaigns, reported Tuesday that it had invested $127,000 on media ads opposing Greg Davis, the mayor of Southaven, who is the Republican Party’s hope for holding the seat. The National Republican Congressional Committee, the DCCC’s partisan counterpart, reported spending more than $62,000 on advertising, media production and mailings in opposition to Childers this week after spending $12,000 the week prior to conduct polling for Davis.
