FEMA numbers jeopardize Jackson aid

Storm damage estimates by the Federal Emergency Management Agency came in much lower than those by the city of Jackson, leaving the city with the possibility of not receiving federal financial assistance.

Jackson might not be able to afford private contractor cleanup services if it does not receive federal help, Jackson Public Works Director Thelman Boyd said Tuesday.

The city is taking bids for debris removal from the April 4 tornadoes as workers from the Public Works, Solid Waste, Parks and Recreation, and Water and Sewer divisions continue storm cleanup duty six days a week for 10 hours a day, Boyd said.

“The rate we’re moving is not as fast as we’d like it to be,” he said, adding he is evaluating the recovery efforts and seeking ways to expedite the cleanup.
