As Mississippi State University Stennis Institute of Government director Marty Wiseman points out in his commentary in “Perspective” today, state voters haven’t chosen a new U.S. senator in a special election since they chose John Stennis in 1947.
It was a fateful choice. Stennis went on to amass vast power and influence and to earn the respect of his peers and the counsel of presidents. But what if that choice in 1947 had gone another way?
Would his opponents have achieved that same level of success and done so with the same level of integrity?
On Nov. 4, Mississippi voters will choose between interim U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Tupelo, and former Democratic Gov. Ronnie Musgrove in a special election made necessary by the December resignation of former U.S. Sen. Trent Lott.
