Interim Department of Public Safety Commissioner Charlie Williams told The Clarion-Ledger today that candidates for the state’s top law enforcement job are currently being interviewed.
An appointment, he added, is expected within the next several weeks. The position requires Senate confirmation and the 2008 session is expected to end April 19.
In late December, former Commissioner George Phillips unexpectedly announced he would step down after holding the spot for little more than two years.
Gov. Haley Barbour named Williams, who was his chief of staff, to replace him temporarily.
