Committee will study utility rates

House Speaker Billy McCoy announced Tuesday a 13-member Select House Committee on Utility Cost Recovery will study a controversial bill allowing electric companies to raise rates to pay for new plants before they’re built.

McCoy said Tuesday the bill needs more study.

“We are all aware of future concerns over the source and cost of electricity for consumers,” McCoy said. “Obviously, the consumers of electricity will pay for the proposed plants; the only questions are how and when. Regardless, this issue is too complicated and potentially costly to be decided hastily without a proper study of the cost recovery.”
