Senate wraps up intense week

The Mississippi Senate wrapped up a week of often intense debate last Thursday, as it passed the last of 271 bills before adjourning.

Bills passed represented what lawmakers deemed among the best of the 1,087 total bills introduced this legislative session. Now those bills will go to the House of Representatives for debate, where they could either be approved or rejected. Those bills that are approved will be sent to Gov. Haley Barbour for his approval or rejection.

Several high-profile bills were approved, including Senate Bill 2596, which is a measure that would seek the death penalty for those convicted of a second offense of sexually assaulting a child under the age of 12. As a proponent of SB 2596, I handled the bill on the floor and was responsible for presenting and defending the bill in the Senate chamber.
