But with Joey Langston’s guilty plea to bribery in an entirely different court and case, it is clear that the whole house is about to come tumbling down. Langston’s sworn plea statement before Judge Mike Mills demonstrates the central role he played in a cozy cabal of corruption that involved many other players. He had been a wildly successful trial attorney of the first order, and the extraordinary value the government places on his testimony is evidenced by the provision in his plea agreement that the government will not seek forfeiture of any of his very substantial assets.
The house of cards cannot survive Langston’s plea of guilty. His was not the central card holding up all the others, but he was very close to the central card. Now, what had been a fun little play house for some pretty sorry actors is about to be a big pile on the floor that will take a long while to clean up.
