How the Process of the Speaker Election Works

When the Legislature convenes next week the Secretary of State will serve as the presiding officer. He will then ask for nominations for a Temporary Speaker of the House. The Temporary Speaker of the House will then be elected by a majority vote of the membership to preside over the approval of temporary rules and will preside over the election of the Speaker of the House. A member of the Jeff Smith Campaign Leadership Team, Rep. Robert Johnson (D, Natchez), will be nominated for the post of Temporary Speaker of the House. We expect that he will be elected to this post. He will then preside over the election for permanent Speaker of the House and will turn over the office of Speaker of the House to Rep. Jeff Smith once Rep. Smith has received a majority of the votes.
