With the announcement this past week by Mississippi’s junior U.S. Sen. Trent Lott, R-Pascagoula, that he would be stepping down before the end of the year, Gov. Haley Barbour and state voters now face a crucial decision in choosing Lott’s successor.
Obviously, Barbour’s choice of an interim senator will anoint that nominee with a golden advantage over other candidates, but ultimately the choice will rest with state voters and they must choose wisely.
Mississippians have for most of the last century been careful and deliberate in their choices when picking their representation in the U.S. Senate.
With Lott retiring and Cochran near that point, Mississippians must make careful choices for new Senate representation and the first priority needs to be whether a successor can fit the mold of the four remarkable men who’ve held the state’s Senate seats for the last 60 years.
