Thompson in Mississippi: National security a top issue

By: Magnolia Tribune - November 20, 2007

The Sun Herald, 11/19/7

Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson says national security is the greatest issue facing the United States in the coming term.

Speaking during a news conference before a Mississippi Republican Party fundraising dinner Monday, Thompson said the biggest threat to America used to be the Soviet Union. Now, he said, it’s al-Qaida and other groups, including “rogue nations in various stages of nuclear capability.”

“Iraq and Afghanistan are the current front in a much bigger global conflict that we’re engaged in,” Thompson said.
