Pardoned ex-con seeks judgeship

By: Magnolia Tribune - November 1, 2007

The Clarion-Ledger, 11/1/7

A candidate for one of Madison County Justice Court judge positions who was convicted of manslaughter more than 20 years ago says his own experience with the legal system gave him the desire to run.

Terry Hawkins faces incumbent District 2 Justice Court Judge Mamie Chinn in the general election next week.

Hawkins served time in prison in 1984 after a Rankin County jury found him guilty of involuntary manslaughter. The 46-year-old Canton resident later became one of 13 people pardoned by former-Gov. Kirk Fordice during Fordice’s eight years in office from 1992 to 2000.
