Small Business Endorses Giles Ward in Senate District 18

JACKSON, Sept. 27, 2007 – The National Federation of Independent Business, Mississippi’s leading small-business advocacy group, today announced its endorsement of challenger Giles Ward in Senate District 18. NFIB is backing Ward because he will be a consistently strong supporter of free enterprise.

“Giles Ward understands the serious threats to free enterprise and will be a dependable advocate for small-business owners in District 18,” NFIB/Mississippi State Director Ron Aldridge said. “NFIB members know Giles Ward can be counted on to promote and protect their right to own, operate and grow their businesses.”

Ward will support an agenda that includes keeping taxes low, bolstering workforce development and protecting comprehensive tort reform passed in 2004. Aldridge noted Ward’s opponent, incumbent Gloria Williamson, has a 31 percent NFIB Voting Record from 2004-07.

“I could not be more honored to have the support of this outstanding organization that represents the mainstream of our state’s economy,” Ward said. “I’ve been involved with promoting small business my entire adult life. In Mississippi, we believe we’ve been blessed with a special portion of ‘the good life!’ I believe that’s due in large part to the investment and hard work of our small-business owners and their employees. Mississippi needs more legislators who recognize the importance of our small businesses, and that’s what they’ll have with Giles Ward in the Mississippi Senate.”

NFIB’s endorsement is a key one for Ward. Small-business owners and their employees vote in high numbers and are known for actively recruiting friends, family members and acquaintances to go to the polls. NFIB has pledged to Ward that it will activate its grassroots network on his behalf.

Ward is a member of the Mississippi Economic Council’s Board of Governors, is past president of the Louisville/Winston County Chamber of Commerce, past chairman of the Louisville/Winston Community Fund, past president of the Louisville Businessmen’s Club and past committee chairman or the Mississippi Manufacturers Association. Senate District 18 encompasses Leake and Neshoba counties and part of Winston County. The general election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 6.

NFIB’s political support is based on the candidate’s position and record on small-business issues. Giles Ward’s endorsement comes from the NFIB/Mississippi SAFE (Save America’s Free Enterprise) Trust, the political action committee for NFIB/Mississippi’s membership. The endorsement brings the considerable grassroots support of Mississippi’s small-business owners to the Giles Ward campaign.
