On the day that by law the city had to have a budget set for fiscal year 2008, the Jackson City Council brushed aside Mayor Frank Melton’s hesitations to come through.
After weeks of haggling, Jackson’s $387.7 million budget includes job cuts and rate hikes but no tax increase, and that’s a real feather in the Council’s hat.
Melton’s proposed cuts, while also rejecting a tax hike, seemed haphazard and not well thought out, which prompted the Council to intervene. As Ward 6 Councilman Marshand Crisler noted, the administration knew the Council’s wishes but ignored them to the end. Then on Friday, the day before the deadline for a budget, the Council had no choice but to be assertive and make cuts it deemed fit.
