A breakdown of the election results look like this:
In the precincts with less than 20% black voters, Smith won 2,512 to 1,874. Within Jackson, Peterson carried the white vote in Belhaven and Fondren, but lost it on the east side of I-55.
In the precincts with a black vote greater than 70%, Peterson won 8,720 to 8,187 — about the same margin she lost the white boxes, but not a resounding vote of confidence.
But it was the precincts in-between, with relatively integrated neighborhoods, where Peterson lost the race. Smith got 4,447 to Peterson’s 3,256.
