Rep. Jeff Smith has announcing his intention to seek the post of Speaker of the House of Representatives for the upcoming term beginning in 2008, according to a news release received by The Daily Star.
. . .
“There are 46 members running for re-election unopposed and I am, fortunately, one of them. There are 11 open seats where the incumbent is not running for re-election. The other 65 seats held by incumbents are contested. It will not be until the November general election is decided that we will know the membership of the House of Representatives. This makes it clear that no one, including the current Speaker, can claim the support of a majority of the 2008 House membership until then. Based on my supporters in the current House I am confident I will be able to maintain that support and build on it after the general election,” said Smith.
