Before anybody hits the panic button, especially worried Mississippi Democrats, the explosive party voter registration ruling by U.S. District Judge Allen W. Pepper contains a safety valve nobody has talked about.
True, the ruling orders voter registration by party designation. But voters can also register “unaffiliated,” as independents. The Legislature could write a new election law to allow independents to participate in the primary of either party (but, of course, not both in the same election).
